Note – while it is certainly possible to install the Google Analytics code directly on your site, we strongly recommend that you use Google Tag Manager to launch the analytics code rather than coding it directly on your site.

The process for adding a single tracking code to your site is very straightforward.  Note, though, that this would only add your own code to your page.  Before doing this, please read about whether you would want to also add the university tracking code as well.

  1. Log in to your Google Analytics account
  2. Navigate to the analytics Property that you want to use. Your tracking code is tied to the Property element.
  3. Click on the .js Tracking Info link
  4. Click on the Tracking Code link within this menu
  5. The code you need to add to your website should be in a box under the Website Tracking header.  It will be a javascript block about a dozen lines long.
  6. Cut and paste that code into the <head> section of your website.  The javascript is asynchronous, so it will not block the rest of your page from rendering or slow down your download speed.
  7. Wait a day then log into your account again. Google Analytics does not generally show real-time changes.  You usually will not see numbers on your GA views until the next day.
